World Television Day

  The ​International Telecommunication Union (ITU) organized the ITU Workshop on “The Future of Television for Europe” , which took place virtually on 19 November 2021. This event was collocated with the meeting of the ITU-T Study Group 9 (Broadband Cable and TV), taking place virtually from 15-24 November 2021. The aim of the workshop was to discuss the future of television for Europe with relevant stakeholders, covering regulatory and policy frameworks, emerging and convergent ICT Infrastructures and services, as well as user interfaces and accessibility issues. It also provided an opportunity to discuss TV-related regional and international standardization and to share best practices and case studies on TV implementations over various media as well as new TV services . Even before millions were confined to their homes by a global pandemic, improvements in internet connections and service offerings had led to an exponential increase in the use of streaming video around the world . With few options left for entertainment, streaming services are taking off. In this commentary, we examine the carbon footprint of these services. The chart below shows each of three ways that the Shift Project overestimated electricity use for streaming video – such as the bitrate – and one area where it underestimated the actual figure. These other errors are described in the text below the chart. Streaming services are associated with energy use and carbon emissions from devices, network infrastructure and data centres.
